William Orcutt Cushing, who signed his name to his hymns simply “W. O. Cushing,” wrote a large number of songs that found wide popularity in Sunday school. He was born in Hingham, Massachusetts, December 31, 1823, and died October 19, 1902.
Most of his songs are of death and heaven. He wrote the “jewel song” when he was a young man, in 1856, and it was composed for use in his own Sunday school. The text is based on Mal 3:17 – “And they shall me mine, saith the Lord of Hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels.”
