Sing to the Lord of Harvest was written by Thomas Bewley Monsell. He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin, and was ordained a deacon in the Anglican church. A prolific hymnist, he published eleven volumes of poems and about 300 hymns. He was responsible for the building or rebuilding of three of his churches. While inspecting the rebuilding St. Nicolas’ Church, Guildford, Monsell fell, and subsequently died in 1875 from an infected wound.
This tune was originally a love song composed in 1575 by the German Johann Steurlein.
