Description

Listen to the beginner piano arrangement of Stricken, Smitten and Afflicted.

Stricken, Smitten and Afflicted was written by Thomas Kelly. Born in 1769, Ireland, he set out to become a lawyer, but after his conversion he entered the ministry in the Church of Ireland (Anglican). His earnest evangelical preaching in Dublin led Archbishop Fowler to inhibit him from preaching. For some time he preached in two unconsecrated buildings in Dublin, Plunket Street, and the Bethesda, and then, having seceded from the Established Church, he erected places of worship at Athy, Portarlington, Wexford, and others where he conducted worship.

The music is set to a German chorale text, “O mein Jesu, ich muss sterben” (O my Jesus, I must die). It is in rounded bar form (AABA’) with identical rhythms in its four musical lines. The music is well suited to part singing and bears a stately tempo.
