The hymn was written by Lewis Edgar Jones, who was born at Yates City, IL, on Feb. 8, 1865.  Graduating from Moody Bible Institute in the same class with well-known revival evangelist Billy Sunday, Jones became active in YMCA work which he did for the rest of his life, serving first as physical director in the YMCA at Davenport, IA, and then as general secretary in Ft. Worth, TX. Hymn writing was his devoted hobby.

In an interview with Preacher Magazine in 1950, he had this to say bout this hymn, “In regard to the writing of my songs, [I] would say that a great many came from sentences in a pastor’s sermons. Since I began this work, I have always been listening for some such inspiration. I remember that ‘Power in the Blood’ was written during a camp meeting at Mountain Lake Park, Maryland.”
