“Arise, my soul, arise” was written by Charles Wesley, the brother of John Wesley who founded the Methodist Church. Along with his brother, Charles Wesley was a leader in the Methodist movement, but is known more for his 6,000 hymns. He concentrated on several important doctrines in his writing, including the personal indwelling of the Holy Spirit, the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit, the depravity of mankind, and humanity’s personal accountability to God. “Arise, my soul, arise,” written in 1742, is one of his most popular hymns.
